Max
After Camden left, Max brushed both hands back through his hair. Everything was pure bliss at the moment, although the lingering concern from Camden's question was still there. Had someone been following Camden? If so, why?
As much as he didn't want to think about it, Max had enemies. Not only because of his line of work but because of his hobbies as well, which often included gambling. Who didn't like a good game of poker once in a while? And if he hustled now and again to be able to afford another case of beer, was it really so wrong?
And, of course, there were the people that he slept with.
But who'd he piss off recently to warrant someone potentially stalking Camden?
No, don't think like that. I'm sure it was nothing, he told himself. Even so, those cop instincts were hard to ignore. He'd be vigilant for the next few days for sure.
The next morning, he got up and did his usual routine of preparing for the day. Now Noel was worked into the routine, which included going for a brisk walk and feeding before work. After bringing Noel back home, Max patted his head and grabbed his car keys. “All right, boy, I'll see you at lunch.”
That morning was a slow one, although he already had tasks lined up for the afternoon. It was mostly paperwork and meetings with a couple of witnesses for a robbery. While Max liked his job well enough, there were times that he thought about switching departments for a change.
Maybe it's time I apply for Homicide, or something. I could use the change of pace.
But now, with the potential for something new with Camden on the horizon, was a career change really a good idea? It'd likely mean even more unpredictable hours and that'd put a strain on the relationship for sure.
Once or twice, Max looked over toward Hayes and Mendes' corner. The two were working loyally through their own cases, exchanging papers and info with ease. Watching them work was like watching some performance piece. They were so in sync with each other.
Did Hayes have any idea that Mendes was going to propose to him soon?
Would Max ever have a relationship as strong as theirs?
He rose from his chair and grabbed his coat, nodding toward Sean, who was working at something on his computer. Sean was the tech whiz and a lot of what he did went over Max's head. “I'm out for lunch.”
“Oh, gonna go home to the dog?” Sean asked as he tore his eyes away from the computer screen.
“Yeah, why?”
“I'm coming with.”
Max raised a brow. “Yeah?”
“Well, I haven't met the dog yet.”
“Suit yourself,” Max said easily enough. He didn't have any issue with Sean coming over to his place.
When they arrived at his place and walked up the lane, Sean smiled to himself. “It's been awhile since I've been here. We need to hang out more.”
“Yeah, we really do,” Max said, his heart doing a funny little thing. Sean was one of the guys he trusted most and was a close friend of his.
